Food Chain Sustainability

Sustainable development is a key focus for many activities within the food and drink sector. Organisations that are able to communicate and document that they are responding to the needs of sustainable development will be seen as pro-active to policymakers, regulators and customers. There are clear economic, environmental and social benefits in adopting on a sustainable approach to production and consumption of food and drink. There are financial and regulatory incentives that optimise sustainable approaches in developing food and drink businesses.

In this section we review a resent Defra publication, the Food Industry Sustainability Strategy (FISS)

. This publication sets out challenges that the food and drink sector must tackle if it is going to develop businesses in a sustainable way. Together with key documents from the Sustainable Development Commission it allows many organisations to focus their activities towards a sustainable development framework. The food and drink sector is dependent on the use of many natural resources and business is carried out in a global arena where activities are being observed by customers and regulators. It is important for everyone in the sector to know and understand the issues and be able to respond to them.
